Staff Members

Clinton -  Ph.D. student in the History department - Currently in Japan - Probably the best calligrapher to attend meetings in the last couple of years, Clinton has studied
calligraphy from old school masters in several countries.  "Old school" here means beat-downs and all types of corporal punishments for bad posture, poor attitude, or anything less than perfection.  Harsh as it may sound, it gets results.

Paul Campbell Paul has been studying Korean for over seven years and uses time at the Chinese Calligraphy Club meetings to practice and memorize Sino-Korean Chinese
characters: hanja

Subir  - Ph.D. student in the Philosophy department.  Subir has participated in the Chinese Calligraphy Club in various capacities longer than any other member and
continues to guide the club with benevolence and unselfishness.

Jie Ma - A first-year in the College, Jie consistently turns out great
calligraphy, week after week.  She is also known to use the larger brushes to paint messages on large banners, which requires great skill and concentration.

Susan Pei - Susan, a fourth-year, has been with the club for years and helps organize large events, such as PanAsia.  Without Susan, the club would sink
into mediocrity.

Sibo Tian - A second-year student, majoring in biological sciences, Sibo is an all-around asset to the club.  In addition to being a great calligrapher and artist, Sibo helps run meetings week-to-week, and also helps organize outings and special events.

Sean Gao -   Sean is a very accomplished calligrapher with lots of experience.
See his great work on the works page.

CHANG HE
Founder
She was born in Yingkou, Liaoning Province and moved to Guangzhou, China when she was eight. After 6 years in an English boarding School at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, in Sept 2002 she came to the States for the first time as a first year at Uof C. She enjoys her first year experience and is very excited for her new club. Her interests vary from economics and politics to French and Ancient Greek. She is very happy to bring and share Chinese culture no matter where she goes. "My brush is an extension of my fingers and the ink is the blood running through my heart." Her great dream is to make her own contribution to China's future as a political leader.

SEEN MENG CHEW
Seen Meng was born and raised up in Malaysia where he went to Chinese schools for education. He started learning Chinese calligraphy from his father and a well known master in Malaysia when he was 12. He was crazy about this art when he was in high school. During that time, he participated in numerous Chinese Calligraphy competitions and exhibitions nation wide. When he started attending university in England, such affinity gradually dissipated as college work was too demanding. However, he is very happy to have joined the Chinese Calligraphy club at the University of Chicago recently where he can once again rekindle his passion and love for this art.

SUSHU XIA
Intoxicated by the power after the heady rise from Minion to Vice President, Sushu now plots to take over the world. In the mean time, she flails about and pretends that she doesn't have school work. As with every other organization, the role of the Vice President seems to be defined negatively from the other board member's duties. In other words: a Minion with Power. Mwahahahaha! A sample of her range: tea-monopolizer, brush-fairy, translator, chronic worrier, hyperactive jabberer.

YILI LIM

Honorary
Great Leader-
for-Life

Yili is a native of Shanghai, China and enjoys the serenity of calligraphy along with the rambunctious yammerings of fellow staff members (I won't mention any names...) Truth be told though, the atmosphere of this club is just as rewarding, if not more so, than the beautiful "writings" of calligraphy. Yili currently lives and works in New York, where she has a rewarding and fulfilling career in the biological sciences.

MARIA KORCHAGIN
Web-Designer

Maria is a native of Moscow, Russia, but she studies Japanese. She knows precisely zilch in Chinese, but she made this site. Her two main loves in this world are Art and Physics, which she tries to balance as well as she can and still fails miserably (this reflects on the numerous doodles produced daily in Physics class). She tries to write the chinese calligraphy characters, but most of the time her artistic instinct kicks in and she tries to draw them instead.
