CLOUDGATE - 05/30/03
Chinese Calligraphy is an form of art that transcends its brush and paper origins. As the Chinese Calligraphy Club took their first social event trip to the Chicago Auditorium Theatre, it became clear that this art even had a place in the realm of dance performance. The Taiwanese Dance Troupe, Cloud Gate Dance Company, in fact took choreographical inspiration directly from the spiritual practice of Chinese Calligraphy. Our club actually witnessed calligraphy in motion through the grace and vision of the dancers. Transforming the linear brushstrokes, and the rich, focused energy of calligraphy into a lyrical and fluid stage performance--Cloud Gate took Chinese Calligraphy to a whole new dimension!

DIMSUM CHINATOWN TRIP - 05/18/03
Our first Club Outing! The Calligraphy Club went to Chinatown for DimSum, so we all got to experience another facet of Chinese culture. The trip brought the club members closer together, and we all got to meet Chang's dad.

"HERO" MOVIE - 05/04/03
Calligraphy Club isn't just a place to wave one's brush around in artistic attempts. We often seek to liven up the meetings with inspirational movies such as "Hero", Chinese music, or discussions of the cultural background of Chinese calligraphy. The fluid martial arts moves of "Hero", as well as the calligraphy-as-manifestation-of-sword-skill theme inspired the club members to greater heights of calligraphy success! (In other words, it's a beautiful movie with kickass action sequences and Jet Li, so any and all excuses are valid for its viewing).

EVANSTON HIGHSCHOOL TRIP - 04/30/03
Our first social event as a club! Three representatives, Chang He, the President, Cora Ang, the Vice-President, and Maria Korchagin, the Web-Designer, went to Evanston Highschool in Chicago and taught about 30 high school juniors and seniors Calligraphy. The three girls enjoyed the trip very much, and the high school students seem to have liked it too. Some even walked away with some of Chang's beautiful calligraphy creations.
